SMA Prospectus: Multidisciplinary Research

All faculty members at the School conduct research on current marine and coastal problems and opportunities. Research projects use data and methods from the natural, social, and policy sciences. Faculty consider the economics of marine and coastal resource use, as well as the dynamics of ocean and coastal environments. Research objectives are to improve government and industry decision making, plan for rational and economic management of the ocean and coastal zone, solve conflicts among users, and describe better policies for multiple-use resource management.

Graduate students participate in these research projects: contributing to data gathering, description, and analysis. They gain firsthand experience of problems they will face as marine resource managers and planners, and their work contributes to the evolution of national and international marine policies.
