Fellowship & Scholarship Funds
SMA has five funds that reward outstanding students each year.
- Alan Blankenship Scholarship
-
The Alan Blankenship Memorial Scholarship is made possible by Mrs. Blankenship in honor of her husband Alan, and his years of service in the sport fishing community. Recipients are actively involved in the field of marine recreation and tourism. The scholarship is to be used to advance the student's education. One student per year receives $1000.
- Sidney and Barbara Campbell Maritime Studies Fellowship
-
The Sidney and Barbara Campbell Maritime Studies Fellowship has been established at SMA to advance educational and professional opportunities for our graduate students. For many years Sid Campbell dedicated time and support to the world of marine studies. Funds are administered in conjunction with the Wedell O. Foss Fellowship.
- Wedell O. Foss Fellowship
-
The Wedell O. Foss Fellowship is made possible by an endowment established by Barbara and Sidney Campbell in honor of her father Wedell, who led the Foss Maritime Company in Seattle for many years. Foss Fellows pursue maritime studies at the School of Marine Affairs. The fellowship allows the student to pay for education and living costs while continuing work on their thesis. One student per year receives two stipends at approximately $2000 each.
- Wendy Graham Scholarship
-
The Wendy Graham Scholarship is made possible by an endowment established by Exponent, a science and engineering analysis consulting firm, and many donors including SMA alumni and faculty, in memory of Wendy Graham, SMA '89. The scholarship is to provide assistance to students in the School of Marine Affairs to further their educational and professional development. The scholarship is to be applied towards registration, travel or lodging costs to attend a professional conference in marine affairs. Up to ten students per year receive $200 each.
- Donald L. McKernan Award
-
The Donald L. McKernan Award was established at the School of Marine Affairs to honor students who have written an outstanding thesis. Professor McKernan was the first director of the Institute for Marine Studies, now named the School of Marine Affairs. A plaque is prominently displayed at SMA with the name of each recipient. One student or recent graduate per year receives $500.
