2001 Director's Report

Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni, and Friends,

This report describes the academic activities at SMA for the year 2000 - 2001. I hope you find it informative and helpful. You can learn about our recent graduates and their thesis research, about the leading research and publications of our faculty and about the important public service work at SMA.

We are looking forward to the coming academic year with great enthusiasm! We are building on the theme of "integrative analysis" which we adopted in our June 2000 Strategic Plan. A new second-year advanced course on integration in marine affairs will be designed this year, and we will explore how the concepts of "sustainable science" and "integrative assessment" can better inform our work. Further, the faculty will be active in a new Collaborative Ph.D. Program in the Interdisciplinary and Human Dimensions of the Earth Sciences.

We are also actively engaged in the dialogue about the future of US ocean policy. It has been over thirty years since the US government has taken a broad look at its ocean affairs. Congress passed the Oceans Act in August 2000 and the Commission set up under that Act begins its work this Fall. Faculty and students will be preparing policy papers and participating in the regional meetings of the Commission. Alumni of the School may be hired as Commission staff. I have been appointed as one of the sixteen commissioners and very much look forward to this important task!

We welcome your interest in the School and the contributions it makes to improved ocean and coastal stewardship. Please contact us or visit our web site for more information.

Sincerely,

Marc J. Hershman
Director and Professor
