Student Internships, Fellowships, and Awards

SMA students have an impressive track record of securing internships, fellowships and awards. We're proud to acknowledge their accomplishments.

Seema Balwani, Jason Larese, Dong-Hyon Lee, Evan Matthews and Ross McDonald received awards for their excellent presentations at the UW Global Trade, Transportation and Logsitics (GTTL) program's annual meeting on June 4, 2001. Cash awards were sponsored by the Boeing Company and the Nan Huai Chin Scholarship program.

Andy Bohlander received an internship with Washington Sea Grant and the Kitsap County Emergency Management Division. Andy also serves as the Assistant to the Editor-in-Chief for the Coastal Management Journal.

Elsa Carlisle was awarded the Alan Blankenship Memorial Scholarship for her studies in marine tourism and recreation.

John Davis received three grants this year for his work on MPA News, a monthly newsletter focused on international news and analysis on marine protected areas. For more information on the MPA News, see Books, Journals & Working Papers section.

Antonia Fairbanks was awarded the Knauss Sea Grant Marine Fellowship for 2001. Antonia is working in the Office of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation.

Tracy Holman won the 1999-2000 McKernan Award for her outstanding thesis titled "Multiple Uses of the Seabed off the Oregon Coast: An Analysis of Recent Interactions Between the Fishing Industry and the Submarine Cable Industry."

Jennifer Ise was awarded the Presidential Management Internship (PMI) for 2000. Jennifer is working with the NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserves program Washington, D.C.

Joel Kopp was awarded a Smithsonian Foundation Fellowship. Joel was also awarded the Wedell O. Foss Fellowship for his studies in maritime commerce and industry.

Ross McDonald received an internship with Odyssey, the Maritime Discovery Center. Ross also received a subsequent internship with the Port of Seattle.

Evan Matthews received an internship with Bryant Christie, an international affairs management firm in Seattle. Evan has also received a subsequent internship with the Port of Seattle.

Sunita Nanda received an internship with the Port of Anacortes.

Jeremy Rusin received an independent consultant position with Brock Bernstein, President of the National Fisheries Conservation Center.

Kate Smuckler received an internship with the Northwest Straits Commission.
