There have been many new faces at SMA this year and friends who have moved on to new oceans and places. Aloha to the following faculty, staff and visitors to the SMA community.

Faculty

Patrick Christie was appointed SMA Research Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2001.

Kathleen Bell, Research Associate in SMA from 1999-2001, was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Resource Economics and Policy at the University of Maine.

Staff

Theresa Butler joined SMA in September 2000 as the new Administrative Assistant to the Director and the Administrator. She brings experience in university-level administration and social work.

Visiting Scholars

Dr. Hyung In Chin is a senior Fellow at the Korea Maritime Institute. Dr. Chin visited SMA in September 2000. His research areas include shipping policy and business, port development and distribution centers, intermodal transportation and international logistics.

Dr. Myung-Shin Ha arrived in July 2001 for a one year visit to SMA. His home base is in the College of Business Administration at Pukyong National University in Pusan, Korea. Dr. Ha's Department of International Commerce and Logistics specializes in international logistics, international transport and port management. His research interests at SMA focus on the comparative evaluation of service quality between the major Asian hub ports and the western ports of North America.

Guy Jobbins is a PhD Candidate from the School of Public Policy at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He visited SMA from February through June 2001 while working on his dissertation involving stakeholder relationships and the capacity for integrated coastal resource governance. His research was performed in Morocco and Tunisia. Much of Jobbin's research deals with fisheries management in marine protected areas.

Dr. Pilsoo Jung arrived at SMA in November 2000 for a one-year visit. He is from the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) where he served as Director of the Port Logistics Research Division from 1988-1998. Recently, he has served as Acting Director of KMI and Director of the Fisheries Economics Research Division. Dr. Jung views his visit as an opportunity "to develop a vision of ocean development possibilities and to extend methods of marine policy implementation." He was co-chair for the successful conference on "Maritime Transportation, Regional Integration and Environmental Barriers in the North Pacific Rim: Policy implications for Korea."

Enrique "Ike" Oracion is from Silliman University, the Philippines, where he teaches and conducts research on regional anthropological issues. He was in residence at SMA from April through June, 2001. One of Oracion's specialties is gender issues in fishing communities.

Dr. Mark Orams spent six months at SMA during Summer and Fall quarters of 2000. An expert in marine tourism with the School of Business, Massey University in New Zealand, Dr. Orams completed several articles while visiting SMA and laid the foundations for comparative research on whale watching between New Zealand and western North America.
