Development Funds

SMA has five funds that assist our students each year.

Alan Blankenship Memorial Scholarship

The Alan Blankenship Memorial Scholarship is made possible by Mrs. Blankenship in honor of her husband Alan, and his years of service in the sport fishing community. Recipients are actively involved in the field of marine recreation and tourism. The scholarship is to be used to advance the student's education. One student per year receives $1000.

Sid and Barbara Campbell Maritime Studies Fund

The School of Marine Affairs is pleased to announce the establishment of the Sidney and Barbara Campbell Maritime Studies Fund. The Fund will support students pursuing maritime studies as they research and write their master's thesis. This added support gives students opportunities to develop the very best information and ideas, and improves the quality of their contribution to the field.

Foss Fellowship

The Foss Campbell Fellowship is made possible by an endowment established by Barbara and Sidney Campbell in honor of her father Wedell, who led the Foss Maritime Company in Seattle for many years. Fellows pursue maritime studies at the School of Marine Affairs. The fellowship allows the student to pay for educational costs while continuing work on his or her thesis. Two students per year receive approximately $4000 each. A plaque is prominently displayed at SMA with the name of each award recipient.

Wendy Graham Memorial Scholarship

The Wendy Graham Scholarship is made possible by an endowment established by Exponent, a science and engineering analysis consulting firm, and many donors including SMA alumni and faculty, to honor Wendy Graham, SMA 1989. The scholarship is to provide assistance to students in the School of Marine Affairs to further their educational and professional development. The scholarship is used by students to attend and present at a professional conference in marine affairs. Several students per year receive a scholarship and the amount of the scholarship varies.

Donald L. McKernan Thesis Award

The Donald L. McKernan Thesis Award was established at the School of Marine Affairs to honor students who have written an outstanding thesis. Professor McKernan was the first Director of the Institute for Marine Studies, now named the School of Marine Affairs. A plaque is prominently displayed at SMA with the name of each award recipient.
