2002 Director's Report

Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni, and Friends,

This report describes the academic activities at The School of Marine Affairs (SMA) for the year 2001 - 2002. I hope you find it informative and helpful. You can learn about our recent graduates and their thesis research, about the leading research and publications of our faculty and about the important career development and public service work at SMA.

Over this past year, SMA faculty and students have been particularly active outside the United States. The section, "Links to the World" outlines the teaching, research and service in foreign countries. This global reach is critical in an era when environmental and management challenges are increasingly international in scope.

In June 2002, SMA played a lead role in organizing the regional visit of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. Faculty and students provided policy papers, field tours, a lecture series and logistical services to support the Commission. SMA organized the 20-member steering committee that officially hosted the Commission and its staff. The work of the Commission will be a key ingredient in the reformulation of U.S. ocean policy that is long overdue.

We welcome your interest in the School and the contributions it makes to improved ocean and coastal stewardship. Please contact us or visit our web site for more information at (206) 543-7004 or sma.washington.edu.

Sincerely,

Marc J. Hershman
Director and Professor
