SMA at the University of Washington offers an internationally recognized master's degree program for launching careers in marine policy and management. SMA's strengths lie in its rigorous academic program, its faculty research in current marine and coastal issues and in the outstanding public service of its faculty and students.

Students at SMA learn creative approaches to resolving marine problems and conflicts and may specialize in a variety of subject areas including coastal zone management, marine environmental protection, port and marine transportation management, living resources management and others.

After receiving the Master of Marine Affairs degree, graduates are uniquely qualified for various marine affairs-related positions. Graduates go on to become policy makers, analysts, planners, administrators, consultants, non-profit managers, educators, activists and researchers.

SMA faculty and students are making important contributions to the marine field. Research teams are breaking new ground in such topics as climate change impacts, waste management, ocean and coastal policy, salmon habitat recovery, ecosystem management, risk analysis, and international collaborations. In the years to come, SMA will give greater attention to integrative assessments and management. Furthermore, faculty are routinely appointed to leading commissions and panels at the international, national and local levels.
