Visiting Scholars

SMA was host to four visiting scholars during the academic year -- Yasuko Tsuru, Rognvaldur Hannesson, Ha Myung-Shin, and Jang In-Sik.

Prof. Tsuru is Assistant Professor at Tokyo Gakugei University in Tokyo, Japan and specializes in international politics, international law of the sea, regime theory and marine policy. During her yearlong visit funded by the Japan Foundation, Professor Tsuru expects to delve more deeply into international fisheries policy.

Professor Hannesson is a Professor of Fishery Economics at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen, Norway. He is noted for wide ranging work in fisheries and petroleum economics. His visit to SMA falls under the Exchange Agreement between the University of Washington and the University of Bergen. His lectures provoked a lot of animated discussion around such topics as fisheries quotas, mariculture and marine protected areas.

Professor Ha is Associate Professor in the Department of International Commerce, Pukyang National University, Busan Korea. His research and teaching interests include, trade, transportation and logistics. Research completed during his sabbatical visit focused on an evaluation of service quality at 15 ports worldwide.

Mr. Jang is Staff Director of the Agriculture, Forestry, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Committee of the Korean National Assembly. He is on a two-year visit hosted by NOAA. His substantial expertise and interest in marine affairs made SMA a logical place to advance his desire to learn more about US marine policy.

Enrique Oracion is a Professor of Anthropology at Silliman University in the Philippines. Professor Oracion conducted research on coastal management and tourism while at SMA for 3 months.

Attorney Liza Eizman from Silliman University visited SMA for 2 weeks to conduct research on legal dimensions of coastal management in the Philippines.

A three-week informal visit to SMA was paid by Professor Alf Hakan Hoel, Chairman, Department of Political Science, University of Tromso.
