Links to the World

This past year, the School of Marine Affairs has been particularly active building national and international academic and professional connections. These links expand opportunities for collaborative research and public service; provide internship and research opportunities for students, and keep SMA focused on the universal dimensions of marine affairs issues and opportunities.

Africa: Professors Hershman, Kaczynski and Miller visited the University of Port Elizabeth in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to design an exchange program and advise regarding study programs in marine affairs; Professor Fluharty lectured in Dakar, Senegal, on fisheries policy and management in West Africa.

Australia: Professors Miles joined with Australian colleagues to design a comparative study of the impacts of climate change in the Southern Hemisphere. Belgium: Professor Fluharty addressed the Fisheries and other officials at European Union headquarters on issues related to reform of the Common Fishery Policy.

China: Professors Kaczynski and Fluharty conducted field research in China under a collaborative MacArthur Foundation grant with Peking University. France: Professor Miles played a leadership role in the conference, "Oceans and Coasts in the 21st Century," sponsored by the International Oceanographic Commission and University of Delaware in Paris.

Malaysia: Professor Miles delivered lectures at the Malaysian Institute of Maritime Affairs, Kuala Lampur.

Mexico: Professor Klinger has been doing field research on benthic habitats in the Sea of Cortez.

Philippines and Indonesia: Professor Christie led a group of researchers and students on field studies during the summer of 2002; Professor Miller visited the Philippines and Indonesia studying tourism development; Professor Miller led SMA in establishing a Memorandum of Agreement with the Lasallian Institute for the Environment of Metro Manila, the Philippines.

Republic of Korea: Professors Fluharty, Hershman, Kaczynski and Miller attended the first APEC Ministerial Meeting on Ocean Governance; SMA and the College of Ocean and Fisheries Sciences signed a memorandum of agreement and cooperation with Inha University, Incheon, South Korea.

Thailand: Professor Christie and four SMA students participated in the inaugural Asia-Pacific Coastal Zone Conference in Bangkok.
