Graduates
Seventeen students graduated with the Master of Marine Affairs degree during the 2002-2003 Academic Year, bringing the total number of graduates since 1980 to 374. The topics covered in this year's graduate theses reflected well the diversity of faculty and student interest and research, curriculum offerings, and the on-going outreach and public service that are the hallmark of SMA. Graduating students are listed with their thesis titles in Table 1.
Three theses focused on the designation of marine protected areas as marine conservation measures, while a fourth concerned the consequences of marine conservation initiatives in Ecuador, and a fifth examined the role of fisheries in the economy of the West African nation of Republic of Guinea. Two students examined aspects of salmon restoration in Puget Sound, while two others examined efforts to protect and enhance the resources of Washington's outer coast. One student developed a bio-economic model for Pacific Whiting, an important West Coast commercial fish stock. Multi-national arrangements for activities that included the global collection and dissemination of climate information; marine environmental protection in the South China Sea; and cooperation between Korea and China in maritime shipping were the subjects of three of the theses completed. Strategies for aiding the recovery of endangered Steller Sea Lions in the North Pacific were explored, as were efforts by local communities to protect shorelines under Washington State's Shoreline Management Act. One thesis comprised a broad inquiry into the ways that social scientific research has influenced U.S. fisheries management, while one other examined application of the tools of strategic planning to redefinition of the role of Korea's maritime police agency.
