2003 Director's Report

Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni, and Friends,

This report comprises the third annual summary of faculty, staff and student activity at the University of Washington's School of Marine Affairs (SMA). In it you can learn about recent faculty accomplishments in research and publication, teaching, and service to the profession and the marine affairs community. You can also learn about grant and contract support at SMA, student work, including the thesis work that students do to complete their Master of Marine Affairs (M.M.A.) degrees, and the involvement of all members of the SMA community in diverse projects and activities that they initiated or helped carry forward during the 2002-2003 Academic Year. The diversity of the activity reported reflects the broad scope of interest and work at SMA, long a hallmark of SMA's approach to the many problems and opportunities that exist in the field of marine affairs.

At the same time, the real world of marine affairs is undergoing continual change and SMA's leadership in this change is apparent in the report. You will see that SMA is now substantially involved in understanding the impacts and potential policy responses to global climate change on the Pacific Northwest's marine and aquatic resources. You will also see that SMA has been heavily engaged with the work of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy as well as with that of the Pew Ocean Commission. The work of these two groups may well lead to the most substantial change in ocean policy at the national level in several decades. SMA now has a growing programmatic emphasis on marine and coastal tourism, and expanding engagement around the globe in areas of work that range from research and engagement in the local co-management of coastal marine resources in the Philippines to assisting the University of Port Elizabeth (South Africa) in the development of its own program in marine affairs.

We welcome your interest in the School and the contributions it is making in improved ocean and coastal stewardship. Please contact us at (206) 543-7004 or visit our website for more information.

Sincerely,

Thomas M. Leschine
Director and Professor
