Students at SMA learn the history and dynamics of marine problems and creative approaches to the resolution of conflicts among actors in marine problems. They may specialize in diverse subject areas, including coastal zone management, in the U.S. or abroad, marine environmental protection, port and marine transportation studies, living resources management, marine and coastal tourism and recreation, and others.
SMA has produced 374 graduates with the MMA degree since 1980. Experience has shown that SMA graduates are uniquely qualified for marine-affairs related positions as policy makers, analysts, planners, administrators, consultants, non-profit managers, educators, activists and researchers. Most students take positions in government agencies at all levels where work focuses on the marine and coastal environment or its resources.
The specific contributions that members of the SMA community make to the field of marine affairs will become apparent in the sections of this report. Such topics as research funding, employment of recent graduates, internship opportunities for current students, SMA's visiting scholars program, and service activities of the faculty are described in the sections, which follow.
