Visiting Scholars
SMA was host to six Visiting Scholars this past academic year:
Professor Yasuko Tsuru is Assistant Professor at Tokyo Gakugei University in Tokyo, Japan and specializes in international politics, international law of the sea, regime theory and marine policy. During her yearlong visit funded by the Japan Foundation, Professor Tsuru delved more deeply into international fisheries policy.
Director General Yong-Woo Lee, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, is a senior Korean official with extensive experience in many aspects of maritime policy. He is studying marine policy and marine environmental issues during his stay at SMA, through February 2004.
Mr. Si-Won Lee, an official with the Marine Environment Division, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, is studying sustainable use of marine resources and after September 2003 will be a candidate for the MMA degree.
Mr. In-Sik Jang is Staff Director of the Agriculture, Forestry, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Committee of the Korean National Assembly. He is on a two-year visit hosted by NOAA. His substantial expertise and interest in marine affairs made SMA a logical place to advance his desire to learn more abut U.S. marine policy.
Dr. Young-So Jang is an Associate Professor in the Division of Marine Industry Policy, Pukyang National University in Pusan, S. Korea, and is studying U.S./Korean fisheries products trade issues.
Dr. Jae-Sang Hong is a Professor at Inha University, Incheon, S. Korea, and a member of the Department of Oceanography. He is an expert in comparative seagrass ecology and management and will be jointly hosted with the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at UW.
