SMA faculty members are active building national and international academic and professional connections. These links expand opportunities for collaborative research and public service; provide internship and research opportunities for students both here and abroad; and keep SMA attuned to the broader dimensions of marine affairs issues and opportunities.

Africa
Professors Kaczynski, Christie, and Miller visited the University of Port Elizabeth in Port Elizabeth, South Africa to offer short courses in an exchange program and advise regarding study programs in marine affairs. This outreach program promotes joint research projects and regional cooperation involving universities in Namibia and Mozambique. Two students will be traveling to South Africa in the coming year.

China
Past field research by Professors Kaczynski and Fluharty conducted in China under a collaborative MacArthur Foundation grant with Peking University has led to collaborative work on a book on the project to be published in China. A proposal for further work is in preparation.
Phillippines and Indonesia
Collaborative research with Indonesian and Philippine universities is ongoing. Professor Christie led a group of researchers and students on field studies during AY 2002-03. Two SMA students were placed as interns to conduct thesis research in the Philippines. Professor Miller was Special University Lecturer at Silliman University in the Philippines on the subject of "Coastal Recreation and Tourism Management and Development."
North Pacific Region
SMA joined the Law of the Sea Institute and the Earl Warren Legal Institute in co-sponsoring the conference "Multilateralism and International Ocean Resources Law", held at Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Berkeley, February, 21 and 22, 2003. Professors Hershman, Miles, Kaczynski, Wooster with co-author historian Sara Tjossem, and SMA Visiting Scholar and Professor Yatsuko Tsuru of Tokyo Gakugei University presented papers and commentary on the history and status of living resources policy and management in the Pacific region.
Republic of Korea
Under the leadership of Professor Fluharty, Hershman, Kaczynski, Miller and four SMA students attended a NSF-funded workshop set up in conjunction with colleagues at Inha University, Incheon, Korea. Now, under development, as a result, is a new concept for regional port analysis and comparative study of the ports of the Puget Sound region and Incheon Port.
