SMA Alum Leads NOAA Camp For Kids
This summer 100 Seattle 10-to-12-year-olds immersed themselves in the mysteries of the oceans and atmosphere as part of NOAA's first-ever science camp. Thomas Callahan, SMA 1995, got the idea for this program "one day while driving into work at NOAA and wondering where his kids could go for summer camp." Tom is the Chief Scientific Support Coordinator at NOAA's Hazardous Materials Response Division, Office of Response & Restoration. "The camp was a great success and it has won the support of NOAA's Administrator," says Callahan. "The next step will be taking the camp concept to NOAA's Office of Education to explore instituting the NOAA Science Camp as a standing outreach program within NOAA. The hope is that we can not only continue the camp here in Seattle, but to also export the program to other regions of the country where there are multiple NOAA program offices." Tom can be reached at thomas.callahan@noaa.gov.
New Port Townsend Maritime Center
Former SMA student Dave Robison is the Executive Director of a new nonprofit maritime center planned at the site of the former Unocal oil terminal on the Port Townsend waterfront. The center is being created in an effort to boost tourism and give local kids a chance to get out on the water. Construction is expected to begin next year and will be completed by the summer of 2005. Dave worked extensively with Professors Marc Hershman and Bob Goodwin while he was a student at SMA.
