2003 Wedell O. Foss Fellows

The Wedell O. Foss Fellowship is made possible by an endowment established by Barbara and Sidney Campbell in honor of her father Wedell, who led the Foss Maritime Company in Seattle for many years. Foss Fellows focus on maritime studies and are continuing or planning a career in the maritime field. This year's winners are Didrik Gritzka and Shannon Kinsella. Didrik's studies at the School of Marine Affairs focus on port management and marine transportation issues. His thesis will examine business opportunities in environmental protection, cleanup and restoration services that the Port of Seattle might pursue as alternative sources of revenue. Shannon's thesis is an analysis of port policies regarding nontraditional economic development opportunities. Shannon works for the civil engineering firm of Reid Middleton as a senior waterfront engineer, where her focus is on the planning and design of waterfront facilities for ports and cities. Congratulations, Didrik and Shannon!

2003 Alan Blankenship Scholarship

The Alan Blankenship Memorial Scholarship is made possible by Mrs. Blankenship in honor of her husband Alan, and his years of service in the sport fishing community. Award recipients are actively involved in the field of marine recreation and tourism. This year's winner is Melissa Andersen. Melissa is currently enrolled in the School of Marine Affairs. Her focus lies in marine tourism and recreation with an emphasis on the educational impacts of marine ecotourism, specifically whale watching. She has completed an independent study with the UW College of Education entitled, "How people learn: implications and strategies for the education of whale watching participants." Congratulations, Melissa!

Excellent SMA Speakers

Two recent SMA graduates, Fan Tsao and Cristen Don, received awards for their presentations at the Georgia Basin/Puget Sound meeting in April. Both students worked with Professor Terrie Klinger on their theses. This was a large meeting with lots of presentations, and the competition was stiff, so the awards were a real honor. Congratulations, Fan and Cristen!
