New Graduates

CONGRATULATIONS to JAMES BUIZER, Autumn 2002 graduate and his committee, Vlad Kaczynski (chair), and Warren Wooster. Jim's thesis title is "Bridging Science to Society Through a New Boundary Organization for Climate Information: The International Research Institute for Climate Prediction." Jim is a returning student who started at SMA (then known as IMS) back in 1987! He is based in Washington, DC where he serves as NOAA's Director of the Climate and Societal Interactions Division and Assistant Director of the Office of Global Programs.

CONGRATULATIONS to SARAH HOWLETT, Autumn 2002 graduate and her committee, Tom Leschine (chair), Andrea Copping and Vera Trainer. Sarah's thesis title is "The Olympic Region Harmful Algal Bloom (ORHAB) Partnership: Recommendations for a Future With Uncertain Federal Support." Sarah has moved back to Pennsylvania and is looking for a job in marine affairs on the east coast.

CONGRATULATIONS to BARBARA NIGHTINGALE, Autumn 2002 graduate and her committee, Dan Huppert (chair), Charles Simenstad and Bruce Miller. Barbara's thesis title is "Meeting the Challenge of the Washington State Shoreline Management Act: Updating the City of Port Townsend Shoreline Management Program." Fairly soon after graduation, Barbara received an Environmental Planner position with the Aquatic Resources Division of the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

CONGRATULATIONS to CRISTEN DON, Autumn 2002 graduate and her committee, Terrie Klinger (chair), and Dave Fluharty. Cristen's thesis title is "Evaluation of Near-shore Buffer Zones of the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge Relative to their Function as a Marine Protected Area Network." Cristen is currently working as an ORISE Fellow on salmon issues.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SMITH THUMMACHUA, SMA 1988, who has successfully completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree in Fisheries in Winter 2003. The Committee consisted of Professors Vlad Kaczynski, Dave Fluharty, Vince Gallucci, Ed Miles as Chair, and Professor Roy Carpenter as the Graduate Faculty representative. Best wishes to Smith and his family as they return to Thailand, where Smith again takes up his duties in the Thai Department of Fisheries.

CONGRATULATIONS to KATE KILLERLAIN, Winter 2003 graduate and her committee, Vlad Kaczynski (chair), and Marc Miller. Kate's thesis title is "Balancing Seafood Exports, Local Consumption and Sustainability of Marine Resources: Policy Assessment and Recommendations for the Republic of Guinea, West Africa." Kate will continue her job as Legislative Assistant at the Washington State House of Representatives for Representative Zack Hudgins, 11th Legislative District. In the future, she would like to do legal or economic development work in either a domestic or international setting.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHANTAL STEVENS, Spring 2003 graduate and her committee, Dave Fluharty (chair), and Tom Leschine. Chantal's thesis title is "Volunteer Initiative and Salmon Habitat Restoration in Washington - The Case of People for Salmon." Chantal is a returning student who originally came to SMA in Autumn 1990. She is starting a new job as Pacific Northwest Regional Manager for Bitterroot Restoration, Inc. in North Bend, Washington.

CONGRATULATIONS to YANG-SOO KIM, Spring 2003 graduate and his committee, Vlad Kaczynski (chair) and Marc Hershman. Yang-Soo's thesis title is "New Shipping Cooperation between South Korea and China: Toward a Common Shipping Market." Yang-Soo will be returning to Korea where he will be appointed to a new position at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF).

CONGRATULATIONS to DONG SHIN YANG, Spring 2003 graduate and his committee, Tom Leschine (chair) and Marc Hershman. Dong Shin's thesis title is "A Study on the Organizational Change of Korea Maritime Policy Agency (KMPA) - Strategic Planning Approach for Acquiring Vital Missions." Dong Shin will be returning to Korea and a new position with the Korean Maritime Police Agency. He hopes that SMA will soon offer a PhD program.

CONGRATULATIONS to GAKU ISHIMURA, Spring 2003 graduate and his committee, Dan Huppert (chair), Andre Punt, Vince Gallucci and Thomas Helser. Gaku's thesis title is "Bioeconomic Model Approach for a Fluctuating Fish Stock: Bioeconomic Assessment of Harvest Strategies for the Pacific Whiting Fishery." Gaku is traveling to Norway where he will do 6 months of study before going to the University of British Columbia, where he will pursue a PhD in Fishery Economics.

CONGRATULATIONS to SUZANNE RUSSELL, Spring 2003 graduate and her committee, Marc Miller (chair), Vince Gallucci and Jennifer Sepez. Suzanne's thesis title is "An Inquiry Into the Use of Social Science in the Federal Management of U.S. Marine Fisheries". Suzanne currently works for the National Marine Fisheries Service and she will soon participate in a 6 month rotation assignment to work on social impact assessments for the NMFS Northwest Region.

CONGRATULATIONS to AN-HO LEE, Spring 2003 graduate and his committee, Ed Miles (chair) and Vlad Kaczynski. An-Ho's thesis title is "Strategies and Effectiveness of International Cooperation Regimes for Protection and Conservation of Marine Environment and Ecosystem in the Northwest Pacific Region." An-Ho will be returning to Korea where he will be appointed to a new position at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF).

CONGRATULATIONS to MONICA FABARA, Spring 2003 graduate and her committee, Dave Fluharty (chair) and Warren Wooster. Monica's thesis title is "The Age of Spondylus and Management Implications: A Feasibility Analysis for the Management and Conservation of the Spiny Rock-Scallop, Spondylus calcifer, in the Southern Coast of Manabi, Ecuador." Monica is enjoying traveling with her children, both locally and around the Yucatan Peninsula. Next fall she will be coordinating the marine monitoring program aboard the tall ship, Empire Sandy, with fellow SMA graduate Nicole Milne, around St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Monica hopes to eventually return to Ecuador to work in marine conservation.

CONGRATULATIONS to ELIZABETH PETRAS, Spring 2003 graduate and her committee, Dave Fluharty (chair) and Doug DeMaster. Elizabeth's thesis title is ÒEvaluating the Use of Marine Mammal Deterrents as a Management Response to Limit Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) Predation on the Endangered Western Stock of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias jubatus). Elizabeth is currently looking for a job in marine affairs.

CONGRATULATIONS to THOMAS KING, Spring 2003 graduate and his committee, Dave Fluharty (chair) and Dan Huppert. Tom's thesis title is "Enforcement of Marine Protected Areas: Case Studies of the New England and North Pacific Fishery Management Councils." He has been assigned by the U.S. Coast Guard to Washington, DC where he will be working for the State Department for the next two years.
