Research Interests

Much of my research, teaching and professional service has concerned the topics of living marine resource management (involving, for example, commercial, subsistence, and recreational fisheries, and marine protected areas and parks); marine (eco)tourism, recreation, and leisure; integrated coastal zone management; and marine ethics, aesthetics, and education. In the last several years, my work has taken me to the coasts of Japan, Korea, South Africa, the Philippnes, California, and the Galapagos. My principal research interests concern such topics as: sustainable coastal tourism development, fishery-tourism interactions, and societal revitalization (including entrepreneurial innovation and diversification for small-scale businesses) in response to coastal zone poverty
