Ed Miles Profiled by National Academy of Sciences
Recently, SMA faculty member Ed Miles was profiled in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). We include the first section of the profile below and invite you to read further at the PNAS website:
Edward L. Miles is one of the few National Academy of Sciences (NAS) members without a formal background in science. However, his extensive studies in international relations and oceanography have brought him into the thick of the debates regarding the laws of the seas and climate change. Elected to the NAS in 2003, Miles is the Virginia and Prentice Bloedel Professor of Marine Studies and Public Affairs at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) and Senior Fellow at the Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean, also at the University of Washington. In his Inaugural Article the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Miles et al. PNAS 2006 103:19616-19623), Miles and his research team propose the creation of a National Climate Service in the United States.
Assistant Professors Christie and Klinger Promoted
Warmest Congratulations to Assistant Professors Terrie Klinger and Patrick Christie, both of whom have been promoted to Associate Professor, commencing Autumn Quarter. In other words, they have both been granted tenure, the successful end of a long and arduous process that began late last summer and ended with final approval by the Provost and Board of Regents. This is the single most important gate through which a new faculty member must pass on the road to a successful career in the academy, so please join us in congratulating Patrick and Terrie.

SMA Students and Faculty Assist State with Ocean Policy
http://uwnews.org/uweek/uweekarticle.asp?articleID=24377
Washington's first formal ocean policy aims to prepare for looming changes along the shores of a state renowned for its natural resources. Much of the information gathering, synthesis and writing has been conducted by Master's students, including John Hansen, and led by SMA faculty member Marc Hershman. Working collaboratively with legislators, agency personnel, tribal representatives and Gov. Christine Gregoire's staff, the students have already helped to generate a 60-page interim report, developed an e-mail newsletter and are now helping draft parts of the final report. Please see the website via the above-listed link for more information.
