Campbell Fellowship Award in Maritime Studies
The Sidney D. and Barbara F. Campbell Maritime Studies Fellowship Fund is made possible by an endowment established by the family in honor of Sidney and Barbara Campbell. Barbara's father, Wedell Foss, led the Foss Maritime Company in Seattle for many years.
Established in 2003, the fund is to provide financial assistance to graduate students who are pursuing maritime studies at the University of Washington School of Marine Affairs.
2007
The 2007 winners of the Campbell Award are Peter Soles and Claudia Capitini.
- Claudia will be studying ways to evaluate frameworks and metrics associated with quantifying sustainability for firms operating in the marine realm.
- Peter will be investigating the process that leading shipping companies have used to design complete classes of environmentally responsible vessels for efficient energy use and minimal emissions.
2006
Katrina Hoffman is the winner of the 2006 fellowship. She will be studying the problem of derelict fishing gear and seeking ways to close the gap between sources of and solutions to the problem.
2005
Award winners for the first year of the fellowship, 2005, were Carrie Byron and Morgan Schneidler.
- Carrie studied the decision-making process employed by the Port of Seattle in deciding the future of Terminal 46.
- Morgan investigated community-based tourism, with a feasibility study for a Makah Tribal tourism pilot project.
