Donald L. McKernan Thesis Award

The Donald L. McKernan Award was established at the University of Washington School of Marine Affairs to honor students who have written an outstanding thesis. $500 from the Donald L. McKernan Memorial Fund is awarded each year to the winning author. Professor McKernan was the first director of the Institute for Marine Studies, now named the School of Marine Affairs. A plaque is prominently displayed at SMA with the name of each recipient.

Congratulations to Peter Soles, reciepient of the 2008 McKernan Thesis Award! Peter is is now working for Westwood Shipping Lines (WSL) as a Vessel Manager in their Operations Department. WSL currently operates con-bulk ships that trade between the Pacific Northwest and the Far East. Peter manages the schedule and cargo operations for several ships while they are in North America.

Congratulations to Katie Lassiter, who is the recipient of the McKernan award for 2007. Katie is currently working as a Sea Grant Fellow in the legislative offices of Washington Senator Patty Murray (D-WA).
